Your Feet Require Attention to Remain Strong and Healthy for Your Lifetime

By Dr. Chris D. Meletis

An incredible 70% of North Americans suffer from foot ailments that affect the quality of their daily life. Unaided, these problems dont usually go away, they continue to worsen.

It was Socrates the Greek philosopher that pronounced that When our feet hurt, we hurt all over. For those that have suffered from a pain in the foot you know how true that statement is. Just like the foundation of your home, if your feet are not strong or structurally aligned the rest of your body will shift accordingly.

Each of your feet has 26 bones, 33 joints and more than 150 ligaments that provide you the ability to stay mobile. These structures house a complex web of nerves and blood vessels that nourish and control the health of your feet. In order to get the maximum mileage out of your feet it is time to take charge of your foot health. This is vital since the average person will walk some 115,000 miles over a lifetime.

The number one priority should be to support good circulation to your feet. Thousands of Americans have their toes and feet amputated largely due to poor circulation and the complications of heart disease and diabetes that compromise microcirculation that diminishes oxygen and nutrient delivery to your feet.

Warning signs that you need to speed up your efforts to protect your feet include:

Dull cramping in your calf muscles when walking

Numbness and/or tingling of your foot or toes

Change in the color of your skin on your feet and toes (pale, bluish or reddish)

Cold feet and felt be a change in skin temperature

Skin infection and sores that dont heal well

Hair loss or decreased hair on your shins

You may only have one of these symptoms to begin with, but dont wait until you have the whole list. Visit your doctor immediately to get a good diagnosis and then focus on improving your diet, lifestyle and supplement regime.

Remember you feet are the barometer of your overall health, the same nerves and blood vessels that may be beginning to complain or are now hollering for some TLC (tender loving care) are literally just the tip of the iceberg. And if you are one of the fortunate 30% of Americans that have yet to suffer from foot symptoms it is time to take the first step to maintaining wellness before you are playing the catch up game of trying to regain the wellness you once enjoyed.

Clinically I recommend that my patients pursue foot health with a skilled podiatrist, foot doctor and by working to increase their overall cardiovascular and nervous system health.

Leonardo da Vinci once referred to the human foot as a masterpiece of engineering and a work of art. A small investment in your feet can pay big dividends. It is the time to give your feet all the attention they deserve before they begin screaming for the attention. After all, put yourself in their shoes, they endure the cumulative force of several hundred tons each day in an effort to keep you running.
